Welcome: Process Safety, Health and Environment Legislation

The subject Process Safety, Health and Environment Legislation introduces students to the legal and regulatory frameworks that govern industrial safety, occupational health, and environmental protection. It emphasizes the role of legislation as a foundation for enforcing safe work practices, minimizing risks, and ensuring sustainable industrial development.

Students will explore key laws, standards, and guidelines at both national and international levels, including Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations, environmental protection acts, process safety management requirements, and relevant Malaysian legislation (e.g., OSHA 1994, FMA 1967, CIMAH Regulations 1996, and the Environmental Quality Act 1974).

Course Objectives

  • Understand the importance of legal compliance in industrial operations.
  • Interpret and apply safety, health, and environmental regulations to real-world scenarios.
  • Evaluate the responsibilities of employers, employees, and regulators under the law.
  • Develop strategies to integrate legislative requirements into process safety and environmental management systems.
  • Recognize the global perspective through international standards such as OSHA (USA), EU directives, and ISO frameworks.

By the end of this subject, students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure compliance with legislation, contribute to safer workplaces, and promote environmentally responsible practices aligned with legal requirements.

Students will be provided with the following resources: 1) Reading Materials, 2) Lecture Notes, 3) Assignments, and 4) Quizzes. They are expected to review all materials thoroughly and complete the corresponding assessments
